A ghost - or spirit or apparition - is the energy, soul or personality of a person who has died and has somehow gotten stuck between this plane of existence and the next. Most researchers believe that these spirits do not know they are dead. Very often they have died under traumatic, unusual or highly emotional circumstances. Ghosts can be perceived by the living in a number of ways: through sight (apparitions), sound (voices), smell (frangrances and odors), touch - and sometimes they can just be sensed.

Residual haunting is a kind of "recording" of a past event on an environment, such as a house, building or a battlefield. These recordings play back, over and over in a kind of loop - always the same, like a film or video. It is thought that the presence of certain people can trigger these recordings to play back. They are not ghosts capable of interacting with the living. It is not known how these recordings are made, but they are often associated with a traumatic or strongly emotional event.

Phantoms - These are ghosts which so closely resemble the living that they are often not realized as ghosts until they do something uncanny, like walk through a wall.

Atmospheric  - Also known as a residual or replay haunting, these are typically seen in only one location repeating a certain action again and again, usually something attached to a traumatic event. I discuss this more under Location Based.

The most common style of a human haunting is a residual haunting. A residual haunting is like having an impression made in time. The entity may seem to be lost in a time warp. The spirit really isn't even there, only the energy is.

Intelligent hauntings are those in which the ghost interacts with the present.  It is intelligent, in
that it may communicate with those on the earthly plane.  The disembodied personhas
elected for some reason to stay or maybe just visit the physical world, due to a connection
with a person, place or thing.  Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's
compelling need to deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over
loved ones.  In addition, it is also plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to
attachments the ghostly person feels through memorie
s, trauma, tragedy or any other emotional tie.

Poltergeists or poltergeist hauntings may be the most misunderstood type of haunting, as
some believe that poltergeist hauntings are not even a haunting at all.  Some people believe that a poltergeist haunt is brought on by extreme stress, anger and frustration, with a human being the cause or agent.  The German word,
"poltergeist," means "noisy ghost."  The best defining mark of a poltergeist is if there is any
manipulation of the physical environment such as the movement of objects, physical attack,
spontaneous combustions, etc, then this is a poltergeist-type of haunting.

Demonic Hauntings are generally accompanied by manifestation of black shadowy figures, and sometimes they take forms of departed relatives to trick their victim.  Their manifestation are sometimes accompanied by foul smells, described as rotting meat, and inexplicable noises such as rapping and scratching on walls, and in more extreme cases, whispers or breaths.
The whispers and voices during a Demonic Haunting are sometimes in a foreign non-human language, and have a distinct ominous tone, often in a deep growling voice.
